GreenFields have installed a new artificial turf pitch at Mutrún Community Football Stadium that was completely destroyed an earthquake and tsunami in 2010. The city of Constitución on the coast of Chile was hit by a huge earthquake and tsunami on 27 February 2010. Over 350 local people were killed and many buildings were destroyed.

The Mutrún stadium was located next to the shoreline and was completely destroyed by the 15 metre tsunami.  GreenFields were appointed to rebuild the Mutrún stadium as a tangible symbol of reconstruction and one that all parts of the community could see and use.

Sports as a tool to reunite the community

Local company, Arauco, and FIFA, through its Goals Programme, funded the project. They needed a partner who could provide the most cost effective solution with a guarantee of quality and delivery so GreenFields were the obvious candidate, beating off four other competitors. Patricio Eyzaguirre, Deputy Public Affairs of the company Arauco in the Maule Region, stressed the importance of the project. “The Mutrún Stadium is a great work that has the virtue of bringing together the community with sport and recreation and will have a huge positive impact on the community.”

The project to rebuild the stadium is part of the Sustainable Reconstruction Plan (PRES) of Constitución, which seeks to build a safer and modern city, with better quality of life for its inhabitants. It was therefore essential that the new stadium should be of a high standard and delivered on time to demonstrate to the community what else was being achieved throughout the city.
